Chini Maati - Part 3

The kings are all the same, in all the countries. They are the ones who lift the country up from the darkness of unknown, to the glory of riches and successes , triumphs and development, culture and education and then they are ones, who due to their whimsical nature and overpowering ego lead the glorious culture into the darkness of anarchy, poverty down into the road of hardships and doom.

The brutality, the atrocities that they imposed on their people and their insensitivity towards their people, is common for all such kings. China too witnessed few such kings as well as queens who through their wishes and whims created beautiful palaces, tombs and much such spectacular architecture, but gave nothing but suffering to their people. They created a mark in the history by being hysterical and ego-maniac, while the whole country was going through bad time.

Chenghis khan invaded china in 1212 and later on his grand son Kublai khan expanded his kingdom in all directions. Russia was under Mongol power for quite some time and he even invaded Japan taking help from Koreans. But due to natural calamities he could not win over Japan. China was a mystery for European countries during those days and Marco polo was the first European to have traveled so far in the east. He stayed in china and served Kublai khan for 17 years.

One interesting thing is, even after being weakened by the exorbitant and lavish living by their kings and not quite caring for their people, china could never be ruled or conquered by any European country.

Even after getting organized under communism headed by Mao, people still suffered due to few whimsical decisions by this great leader. Mao promoted "Burzva" which is saying no to English, saying no to past history of china, its imperialism, saying no to Confucius, saying no to art and architecture. His slogan was "destruction before construction".

Many of the school goers and college goers became red guards. Books were burnt, old temples, and art work was destroyed, intellectuals were killed. Although the country got rid of it's imperialism, the communism came with its own bitterness and shortfalls. Today's prospering china is a result of discipline enrooted by communism and dictatorial rule, while good balance of capitalism within the current communist framework.

Apart from writing books, one more thing that Meena Prabhu does have real passion for, is savoring the delicacies of every region. She seems to have tuned her taste buds to all those different varieties of food and makes out good and bad food from those unknown culinary specimen, with as much ease as you can differentiate between a good Baigan Bharta and a bad one. Her love for these different types of food is also visible from her writing and she does that as religiously as her writing.

Smaller paws was supposed to be a sign of beauty in Chinese culture and those having normal paws were used to be generally from the poor or lower families. Mothers even broke the paw bones of their little ones at a very early age to limit their growth. A lady with three inch paw was considered to be most beautiful and called "Golden Lily". How funny to just, think about it in terms of how perceptions vary in different times and cultures. Beauty being measured in terms of kilos and size of the paw might seem totally out of the world at this time even in china, but this was the norm of those days.

It is interesting to know that Islam was part of Chinese culture even before Chenghis Khan's tartar force invaded china through the great china wall. China's ancient capital Shia still has lot of its olden architecture and fortification. The silk route was in use for centuries and china made sure that the secrets of tea, porcelain or silk doesn't leak out, so that rest of the world remains dependent on them.

The tea ceremony from Japan, is also a borrowing from china, but is more prominent and visible in Japan now, rather than in China. Its interesting to know that every Chinese has a simpler English name probably to make life simpler for outsiders, by not having to twist their tongue to their Chinese names.

The acrobatic skills and synchronization is one more area where Chinese excel and no wonder why they get so many medals in all such categories in Olympics. My prior notion about Chinese singing, that its generally monotonous and having limited range of "Sur" and "Naad", is not completely true and looks like they do have a well formed singing style as experienced by the writer during one of the concerts. Although the Beijing opera was a huge fiasco and its really difficult to make out anything from what's happening on the stage even from the acting and makeup, leaving aside the language barrier.

The Beijing has 12 million people 1 million cars. But it also has 12 million cycles and the discipline follows by these cycle riders within their traffic lanes is spectacular. In terms of language mandarin is a bit softer and sweet while Cantonese is on the harsher spectrum. Chinese marriages happen in a registrar's office and the bride wears a western style wedding gown. In fact many part of world, be it china, Japan or even few gulf countries all have adopted this western style of marriage. Many of these cultures are centuries old, but surprisingly all of them resort to western culture for their marriage celebrations. This can be quite a bright spot on cultural heritage front for us Indians, as we still stick to our traditions in various parts of the country.

The descriptions of datsu Buddha carvings, the La shan Buddha and the religious divine beauty of emelee is enchanting. The La shan Buddha is again a wonder and must have taken years to carve out a Buddha of that size. Just to give you an idea of its size, Meena says we can probably park a maruti 800 on its toe nail. Meena gives us a local experience of a typical Chinese village by visiting a small village near gwalin. The cycling along the farms, the hardworking Chinese farmers, the poor, but hardworking guide, who cooks food for her in her humble hut, in her farms, a real experience of being one with the culture.

Well its time to say "Sheshiye", which is thank you in Chinese, for patiently reading out my blog. Please do ignore the editing mistakes, as I am still learning to write…. Sheshiye again

Monsoon

The monsoon is here and it is here with a bang this time. We Indians probably celebrate monsoon like no other people in the world.

I strongly believe that, we still have that farmer instinct deep within us and it just subconsciously creates that feeling of festivity, well being, as soon as the monsoon arrives. It means good crops, it means prosperity, it means relief from the heating sun, it means start of new life.

Few couples add lot of romance to this season, by zooming around on bikes and enjoying those showers, actually soaking themselves into that chilly wetness. Few couples are little mischievous, and make sure they pick up just one umbrella, while going out, to enjoy the monsoon in a shared umbrella. Just the classic Hindi film like romance. Some people get nostalgic by, just paying a visit to the Nariman point, to see those thundering waves dashing against the rocks. Feels like you are embracing the sea there. Well this sight is so romantic during those days.

The average mumbaikar living in an one bedroom flat and traveling daily in the Mumbai's local train, gets really annoyed, when BMC (Bombay Municipal Corporation) start putting in those water cuts, as May comes by. But guess what, as the rain comes ,this very mumbaikar get relaxed, as he knows his one tubful of ration, on bathing water is soon getting over. Well just a tiny little joy, but brings lot of happiness.

The trekkers reach out for their sacks and trekking shoes and the greenery of the Sahyadris starts calling them. The options are unlimited and trekking in sahadris has its own feel and fun. The "Vinchukada" of Lohagadh or the "kaarvi cha ban" from Tandoolvadi, the green thickness of passage to Chinchoti waterfall, all these places wear that beauty of those emerald ornaments, those shades of greenery. The chirping birds, singing to the tunes of tip tip, the entire flora and fauna suddenly becomes alive and shade their lethargy to celebrate this monsoon.

If you are not staying back at least a day during heavy rain, whatever may be the reason, genuine or non-genuine; you are not completing the ritual of "Mumbai Rains". And then the hot "Bhajias", tea with a bit of ginger in it and then watching the heavy showers, people carrying colorful umbrellas and kids wearing those beautiful raincoats, splashing water at each other, Oh my God !!!! I am just getting nostalgic about all this. Every time I even think about this an array of events splashes through, screen by screen, just like a movie in fast forward. Each event being unique and related to this beautiful season.

I just can't forget those days when schools used to be closed down early and then we indulging ourselves into the different water games that we played on the way back to home, right from paper boats to splashing water on each other, catching crabs and fish or just making way out through the heavily water-logged roads. And then mom waiting at home, just a little worried. The ceremonial hot water bath after that, to keep away from cold and some tea was rejuvenating, typical of any loving mother, again makes me nostalgic.

In most of the other parts of the world, I think the rain phenomena is not so much seasonal the way we have it. So the craving for those first showers, the relief that the summer is finally finally over and monsoon is back with all its thunder and lightening to beat the heat and increasing our heartbeat too, is quite unique to us. So just indulge yourself, soak in those first showers and say bye bye to heat and lethargy. The life, the energy is back. Happy Rains ..

BEST OF FIVE.

Chini Maati - Part 2

Meena shows her strength as a writer by painting the pictures of the palaces and gardens and beautiful architectures on the canvases of your mind, as she goes on unleashing the Chinese beauty in terms of nature as well as architecture. The writing style of Meena Prabhu is so much free flowing and detailed, so that she holds us witness to each and every event that happens during her journey into the culture, history and geography of the country.

Tianmen Square has enchanted her and she is fully successful in depicting the true value of this square in the minds of a Chinese, linking it to the history and events that got associated with this grand monument. The Forbidden City is equally beautiful and there is this deep surge of getting up and booking tickets to China as she describes the beauty and glory of these ethereal monuments of beauty.

The discovery of cultural monument, like terracotta army and many more such ancient artifacts gives you a glimpse of centuries old Chinese culture and keeps your breathless when you come to know the fact and figures related to these marvels, still available for us to see. It might have witnessed so many downfalls, so many glorious years and contributions of so many poor people, sweating day and night to fulfill the mad ambitions of their kings and queens. The wall of china is one such marvel and the span of this structure is almost twice the length of India, measured from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

All those Chinese words that were totally obscure to me for long time, started making sense, all of a sudden after reading this book. For example chin, ming, han are the dynasties of the emperors that ruled china. Tao and Confucius were the saints or philosophers who guided china for centuries while tai chi is the ancient yoga like art from china to build and exhilarate the power of mind and soul. In fact the marshal art forms, like koong foo and karate are nothing but the offshoots of this great art of controlling your mind and body.

Yangtze can be called as the ganga of the china, it is also called as the yellow river. The example of what kind of prosperity a focused government can bring to the country is this huge dam being built on Yangtze. This dam is going to be a most ambitious project and would take care of huge need of power from the newly industrialized Chinese towns. It has 26 turbines and the whole world is watching this happen. Lot of stakes are in this dam for the Chinese government as well as its people. But everything seems to be happening well and Chinese seem to be well motivated to finish this project. The kind of electricity this would produce would be equivalent to 9 nuclear power stations.

I just wonder when we would be able focus, on our national needs and work towards building its resources. We are still not been able to satisfy the need of water in all the regions, leave around the electricity problems. The "ring canal" project is something I had heard of in my school textbooks. Although we have been given reasons like lack of funds etc, what we lack mainly is the political will, to even take up any such project. All the economic growth is useless, unless we build our basic infrastructure, provide jobs for everyone and have some vision for our country. But nothing of this sort seems to be happening.

Failing to Plan mean Planning to fail.

Chini Maati (by Meena Prabhu) - Book Review

Reading Meena Prabhu's travel experiences are always a treat and then she keeps getting better and better with her each book. It's a passion that she carries with herself as she continues exploring nation after nation. Her points of interests are the ancient civilizations and her expertise, making you feel and be one with all the experiences that she gets through her rigorous but rich travel experiences. Marathi readers are lucky to get a writer of her caliber and reading her books are nothing less than a journey through the eyes of writer into the history, culture, nature, people, food, architecture, politics and many such aspects of any country's social life.

I personally has a lot of fascination for china, since childhood and still have those blur memories of visiting Dr.Shu from Vasai for my dental problems. I even have few nice images of Chengdu, as I used to watch CCTV in Bahrain, since I didn't have cable for few days. Surprisingly this CCTV was free to air service in that part of the world and I had seen probably some of the images of cherry blossoms from Chengdu. Even after being so close to us, there have been lots of questions in my mind about china and the Chinese people and customs. I got most of the answers through this book.

In this book Meena's journey starts from Hongkong and ends at Gwalin. She covers flourishing Shanghai, historical and majestic Beijing, the honeymoon city of Haunzau, the Venice of the east, Sujau and cities like Chengdu, Daatsu and Kunming. As I said the journey keeps on revealing the unknown parts of this ancient culture, both dark and bright spots and makes you realize their contribution to the mankind, as well as their own fights, turmoil and instinct to survive and rise again.

Hongkong was a fisherman town, taken over by British during opium war and now one of the most cosmopolitan city and a trading centre competing with its neighbour Singapore. After getting liberated from British it still maintains its independent status from the rest of the china. Macau was one more such Chinese territory owned by Portuguese and still maintains some of the architectural and cultural significance of its European ruler.

Shanghai was distributed between French, British, Americans and Germans during opium war, the history of which is quite interesting. China exported tea, silk and spices to other parts of the world but never allowed foreign good to enter it's land. The trading happened only against gold and silver. British never liked it, they started pushing, infiltrating opium into china, cultivated in northern India, thus addicting them to this deadly drug. There were generations which got addicted and British controlled the trade. Finally Chinese emperor requested queen to stop this illegal opium trade, but all in vain.

Finally he had to collect all the opium in the country and drown it in the sea, which triggered the well known opium war. Although British could not rule the whole of china, after china's defeat china, had to allow British and French to set up trade centers in shanghai called as concession areas. Even the British newspapers condemned this war which was completely baseless and was only intended towards subduing china to open up trade with British.

Result, shanghai is having a very multicultural look with the touch of British, French and American architectures at various parts of the city, now a flourishing city quite close to Hongkong. The yuyuan garden in shanghai developed by a son for his parents to spend their olden days peacefully, is another marvel and piece of an art.

Haunzau is famous for its beautiful lake and the old, very Chinese looking palaces around its banks. It's a quiet secluded place and the boat ride at night in this lake is a life time experience. A visit to a pagoda and a medical museum, were the highlights of stay in Hangzau. Just like us Indians Ayurveda, Chinese art of medicine was developed several years ago and was passed on from generations to generations and hence preserved to a great extent to date.

Sujau as Marco polo has described is truly a Venice of the east and has most beautiful gardens and canals build over centuries and known since the silk-route times. The canal that connects two of the largest rivers of china flow through this province. It connects Yagatsei and Hau jo va or yellow river.

Tea, chai whatever you call it (now a days costa coffee counters in US sell tea with a name chai). Turkey also calls it chai. The china was consuming this chai for more than 4000 years not just as an energizer, refresher, but as a medicine. There have been chai pandits writing chai shastra and they still have these tea ceremonies happening as an integral part of their culture. Mind you it's not the black fermented powder that we use in India or in Srilanka, but a Chinese chai is plain tea leaves boiled in plain water, being savored throughout the day.

Meena Prabhu do have a passion for massage and has given the account of massages all across the world as she keeps traveling. The Hamaam from turkey is a bigger ceremony and keeps going for centuries in the form of man to man and woman to woman massage in hamaam khanas with a hot sauna style bath. The author has admired the swift Spanish massage and the systematic massage that you get in few parts of south India using toes and fingers of feet The Hungary again is famous for it natural hot springs and Germany's bathing-bathing is again a very ceremonial or rather religious experience where people just relax leaving behind the apprehension of being nude. Chinese massage is again done with your cloths on and more of an acupressure therapy and has developed over a period of time as a science or technique rather than an art.

The china wall, one of the wonders of the world, truly deserves that status. The first brick was laid out when Buddhism was born, which is 600 years BC. It took more than 1800 years for the wall to be completed. It starts from the sea on the east and extends till Gobi desert providing protection from the Mongolian or tartar invasion. Thus china remained protected within these natural boundaries of Himalayas in north, Gobi desert in west, sea in the east and the greatest ever wall built in man's history the china wall in the north. China was called the middle kingdom then and they totally isolated from the outside world for centuries. These people have considered themselves superior to the outsiders for ages.

The inventions like tea, paper, gun powder, silk remained unknown to the outside world for centuries. Meena does find some of our Indian vegetables in china, like "Aaloo chi pana" not the Aaloo as in batata and even tandulka etc. She also narrates a beautiful story related to cross bridge noodles, which is nothing but chicken soup with noodles. Some of the Muslim areas have nice road side kiosks (tapri would be a better word) serving kebabs. Dimsim is again some Chinese specialty, a combination of soups & chicken.
